Union Community:

As you may be aware, the Commonwealth Court overturned the mask mandate for schools today.  The Governor’s office has indicated that they will file an appeal today, and the Secretary of Education sent guidance to districts this afternoon.  The guidance from PDE states:

“Earlier today, the Commonwealth Court issued a ruling voiding Acting Secretary Beam’s school mask order. The state is filing an appeal today, which will trigger a stay of the Court’s ruling and keep the order in effect.

Schools should continue to observe the school masking order throughout the duration of the court’s proceedings.”

As a result of this guidance from PDE, the mask mandate for students and staff in school buildings will remain in place.  Students and staff must also continue to wear face coverings on all district transportation.

We were caught off guard at the announcement, like many of you.  We will continue to provide you with updates as we receive them.  Thank you for your continued patience, understanding, and support.

I would be happy to speak with anyone who has questions.  I can be reached at m_ross@union.k12.pa.us or 724-658-4501 ext 2301.

Thank you,

Dr. Michael A. Ross
