Winter Weather Watch

Dear Parents/Guardians,

When snow or other inclement weather conditions are predicted, the safety of Union Area School District children becomes a prime concern for parents and school personnel.

SCHOOL CLOSINGS, DELAYS OR EARLY DISMISSALS

If school is to be delayed, cancelled, or an early dismissal is required, you will receive telephone notification
through the Alert Now Notification System and the decision will also be broadcasted on KDKATV
(Comcast Ch 2), WPXI-TV (Comcast Ch 11) or the following AM radio stations: KDKA (1020),
WKBN (570), WKST (1200) and WJST (1280). You can also get school delays/cancellations online at
WPXI.com (click on weather and scroll to school closings/delays) and WKST.com (click on closings
and cancellations).

On days when weather conditions cause only minor delays for school buses, students are asked to wait a
maximum of 15 minutes at the bus stop. However, the waiting period is at the parent’s
discretion, depending on wind chill factor, etc.

One or two hour delays in school starting time may be made when weather conditions warrant. If road
conditions worsen during the day and it is not possible to properly maintain the roads, students may be
delayed in arriving home. There may be advanced warning during the school day of potential weather
conditions that would warrant closing school at an earlier time. PARENTS WHO ARE NOT HOME
DURING THE DAY SHOULD MAKE PRIOR ARRANGEMENTS FOR THEIR CHILDREN’S
SHELTER IN CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.

It is the school district’s responsibility to safely transport children to and from school. However, parents
must decide whether or not their child can withstand the weather to wait for the bus and go to
school. When school is open but a parent feels that the weather conditions make it inadvisable to send
their child to school, the parent may keep the child home. Send a brief written excuse when your child
returns to school. Such absences will be considered excused.
